Who is the Sour Spirit and How Did He Became Famous in Montana?
Glacier National Park is a very beautiful place in the state of Montana. It has big green forests, clear blue lakes, and high mountains covered in white snow. For a long time, it was very hard for visitors to see these beautiful places because there were no paths for cars. Then, engineers built a special highway called the Going to the Sun Road. This famous engineering marvel solved a major problem and changed how people view and travel across the American West.

The Early Days of Glacier National Park
Glacier National Park officially opened to the public in May 1910. In those early days, the park did not have any paved paths for automobiles. Visitors who wanted to see the high mountains had to travel by foot or ride on horses. This took a very long time, and the journey could be very difficult. Most people could not see the beautiful sights inside the deep valleys because they were too hard to reach.
An important change happened in America during the early 1900s. A man named Henry Ford created a new way to build motor cars very quickly. He did this on an assembly line. He introduced the famous Ford Model T car in the year 1908. This made cars much cheaper for regular families to buy. Soon, thousands of everyday people owned automobiles and wanted to drive them to distant, scenic places in the West.

A Bold Plan for the Mountain Highway
An engineer named George Goodwin worked for the National Park Service. In 1917, George proposed a bold plan to build a long highway directly through the middle of the park. This new pathway would connect the West Entrance at West Glacier to the East Entrance at St. Mary’s. His plan was very important because it would allow people to drive across the steep mountains in just a few hours.
The project faced many challenges before the work could even begin. George Goodwin wanted to use steep switchbacks to climb up the mountain walls. Later, a park superintendent named Stephen Mather decided the path should follow the natural shape of the cliffs instead. This choice made the path look more beautiful, but it made the construction work much harder for the laborers.

Overcoming Obstacles at Logan Pass
Construction on the new mountain highway began in the year 1921. It took eleven long years of hard work to finish the project. Laborers had to cut through solid rock on the sides of steep cliffs. They worked in very cold weather and heavy snow high up in the mountains. The highest point on the route was named Logan Pass, which stands at an elevation of 6,647 feet above the level of the sea.
The workers could only build the highway during the short summer months because the winter weather was too dangerous. They did not have big modern machines, so they used dynamite explosives to blast away the heavy stone. Men hung from long ropes over the sides of deep canyons to build strong stone walls. Sadly, three workers lost their lives while building this difficult mountain highway.

The Legend of the Sour Spirit
The special highway received its name from a high peak called Going-to-the-Sun Mountain. This large mountain towers over the road just east of Logan Pass. The name comes from an old story told by the Blackfeet Native American people. The legend says a grand spirit named Sour Spirit came down from the sky to help the people. He taught them how to hunt animals and find food.
When his work was finished, Sour Spirit traveled back up toward the hot sun. He left a special image of his face on the stone of the high mountain. This image stayed on the rock to inspire the Blackfeet people for many years. The early builders chose to use this traditional name for the new road to honor the history and culture of the region.

The Highway in Modern Times
The complete highway finally opened to the public in the summer of 1933. Before the road was built, traveling across the park took several days of hard trekking. After it opened, visitors could drive the entire 50 miles from the west side to the east side in less than two hours. The path became famous around the world for its amazing views and narrow cliffside lanes.
Many millions of travelers visit Glacier National Park to drive on this pathway every year. The scenery is so beautiful that filmmakers have used it in famous movies, such as the film Forrest Gump in 1994. The opening scene shows the clear waters of St. Mary’s Lake near the East Entrance. Today, the National Park Service works hard to fix the stone walls and keep the route safe.

A Window into the West
The Going-to-the-Sun Road remains a grand symbol of human effort in the American West. It shows how people used engineering to solve a difficult geographic problem in the mountains of Montana. The highway allows modern visitors to stand among the high peaks and see the wild country just as the early pioneers did long ago. It connects our modern world to the ancient beauty of nature.
Driving along the edge of the cliffs at Logan Pass is an experience that people never forget. The old stone walls and narrow paths remind us of the laborers who worked with dynamite and ropes in the summer heat. This unique path will continue to welcome curious onlookers into the heart of the Rocky Mountains for generations to come.
